White “Allies”: Two Ways Not to be Fucking Obnoxious on Social Media Right Now

be a good ally

1. Don’t post a posed photo of your white self and posed, pouty lips…

Immediately followed by the dying words of a black man who was murdered by the police in your caption which, upon clicking the read “more” option, flows out into a poem “you” wrote by essentially copying and pasting (stealing) variations of things black people have said, written, and/or begged, pleaded, and cried (often during their dying moments).

Oh my YIKES.

Furthermore, being a white, pansexual woman essentially makes you untouchable to both non-black and black PoC (regardless of whether we are queer ourselves).

Deep down, I think you are aware of this.

Non-black PoC allies and black folks know we cannot stand up to you because your entire social media presence reeks of the following weather forecast: “90% chance of white women tears and potential loss of a white ally.” It is a well-known fact that, in the current moment, it is on white allies to stand up to their white counterparts about these transgressions because it is white people like you who severely punish non-black PoC allies, black people, and corresponding movements (mainly the ones for black lives)…

Simply for daring to show you a better way.

However, we also realize we cannot necessarily count on the white people you know or who follow you to tell you what’s up; if that was the case, the oppression of and violence against black people in this country would not thriving in the present era.

White women tears are dangerous to all PoC, but extremely lethal for black folks specifically. Either do better, or just admit you’re unable to not center yourself in the #BlackLivesMatter movement and delete your fucking Instagram account.

2. Don’t wait all day for your brown friend to get extra dark at the beach, talk them into taking a photo of their skin next to yours while lying about why you want it (see header photo), use it to spice up your Instagram aesthetic/earn you some diversity points, and then post it two years later in #2020 in the midst of the BLACK Lives [not BROWN Lives] Matter revolution for your #BlackLivesMatter allyship/guilt-alleviating moment.

Better yet, don’t be ignorant enough to post it on #BlackOutTuesday as your fucking #BlackOutTuesday post.

Are. You. Fucking. Stupid?!

Again, your brown friend knows yelling at you is a recipe for your white women tears and the potential loss of a white “ally” at a time when white support is vital. Your other friends probably don’t even realize the pictured is a brown hand you’re exploiting and passing off as a black hand for likes in a movement that is about so much more than your social media clout (especially as a white person).

Your behavior is performative, frustrating, infuriating, ignorant, harmful, humiliating, violating, and, worst of all, 100% racist.
